VBOC VETERAN SPOUSE SPOTLIGHT

Simpla Genetics

Board-Certified Genetic Counselor · Military Spouse · Entrepreneur

What happens when a decade of clinical expertise meets the flexibility of entrepreneurship? For one military spouse, it became Simpla Genetics — a private practice bringing personalized genetic counseling directly to patients in Nebraska and Iowa. No referral runarounds. No access barriers. Just clear, expert guidance on genetic testing and inherited conditions, right when families need it most.

We sat down with the founder to hear how military life, a Boots to Business course at Offutt AFB, and the support of VBOC Nebraska/Iowa helped her turn years of clinical experience into a business she’s proud to call her own.

Q: Tell us about your business — what do you do and who do you serve?

“I’m a board-certified genetic counselor and the founder of Simpla Genetics, a private practice healthcare company that provides personalized genetic counseling on genetic testing and inherited conditions. Utilizing my 10 years of experience as a genetics expert, I also work with doctors and other healthcare providers to promote appropriate use of genetic testing and provide guidance on inheritance and medical management. My goal is to make genetic services and clinical testing more accessible in Nebraska and Iowa.”

Q: What inspired you to start your own business, and when did you take that leap?

“I spent years providing genetic counseling in a variety of hospital settings, and it was rewarding to work closely with individuals and families navigating early genetic diagnoses, educating them about genetic diseases, coordinating genetic testing, and supporting them during difficult times. Because my partner is an ADSM, we have moved a couple of times, which makes it difficult to maintain a career. When we moved overseas in 2021, I decided to work as an independent contractor, and I enjoyed the flexibility and freedom of being my own boss. Upon returning to the U.S., I considered other entrepreneurial ventures that combine aspects of my clinical and technical background and enrolled in the Boots to Business course. I officially took the leap to start Simpla Genetics in the fall of 2025, and it has been incredibly rewarding to build something that combines aspects of my career that I am most passionate about: clinical genetics, preventive healthcare, and bridging the gap between complex science and informed healthcare.”

Q: How has VBOC Nebraska/Iowa supported your journey?

“VBOC has been an amazing resource throughout my entrepreneurial journey. The mentors at VBOC have been available every step of the way as a sounding board, providing advice, education, and encouragement. I took a Boots to Business course at Offutt AFB in the summer of 2025 and finished it with the confidence to begin forming an LLC. There’s a lot to learn about starting a business, so having access to people who genuinely want to support Veteran and military spouse entrepreneurs has made a huge difference.”

Q: What advice would you give to a fellow military spouse who is thinking about starting a business?

“My biggest piece of advice is to take advantage of the resources available to military spouses and other free business resources in your community. Many military spouses don’t realize that programs like VBOC offer free business classes taught by numerous community professionals, including business mentors, lawyers, and professionals who help businesses apply for government contracts. Using these resources will help you get on the path to business success!”
